When Do I Test My Hot Tub Water?

Complete Guide to Spa & Hot Tub Chemicals For Dummies

“How often do I need to test my hot tub water?”

You should test hot tub water once every 1-2 weeks depending on your personal spa usage. The more people who use the tub, the more you will want to keep tabs on your water chemistry. When you test your hot tub water you are checking for safe pH, alkalinity, and chlorine or alternative sanitizer levels. It is important for the pH of your hot tub to be between 7.4 and 7.8 for safety.

Make sure to continue to test your hot tub water even if the tub isn’t being used regularly. Elements in the air can also contribute to hot tub water imbalance. Water imbalance could also lead to stains in your tub or surface damage. However, if you establish a strict schedule for testing and treating your spa water, you can keep your water clean and safe and the tub free from damage.

With regular testing and maintenance, your hot tub will always be ready to give you a relaxing and safe experience.

How Do I Test My Hot Tub Water?

Testing your hot tub water at home is easy. You can either use test strips or a liquid test kit.

To use a test strip:

  1. Dip your test strip into the middle of the hot tub away from the jets.
  2. Immediately pull it out.
  3. Do not shake it. Hold it still for approximately 15 – 20 seconds.
  4. Compare the color of the strip to the guide on the packaging.

To use a liquid test kit:

  1. Collect a water sample with the collector from the kit. Get your sample from the middle of the tub away from the jets.
  2. Add the appropriate number of drops of phenol red to the pH side. Follow the kit’s instructions.
  3. Add the appropriate number of OTO drops on the chlorine side. Follow the kit’s instructions.
  4. Hold the collector in front of a white background to compare the colors to the kit’s guide.
